Bright Selfie at Capital |
Wondering if early-morning hikers would pass my campsite on the Rock Creek Trail, I started moving at about 5:15 AM. With little trouble (I did ask for clarification a few times), I cycled into Washington, D. C. via the Rock Creek and Capital Crescent trails. At about 9:30 AM, I arrived at the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.

Having built several days into my schedule to explore the city, I took my time with Lincoln, then wove my way around pedestrians to the capital building, entered the Visitor’s Center and took the tour. I would recommend this to every U. S. citizen.

Taking the underground tunnel to the Library of Congress, I wondered at the grandeur, looking more at the architecture than delving deep into the historical placards. Realizing it was time to leave for my hostel, I exited the library to find the sky had opened; lightening flashed. I joined the large number of tourists hunkered down under cover until the rain slowed.

After the weather subsided, I cycled two miles to D.C. Lofty, the hostel I had previously booked. The location and price were superb. After getting settled, I did laundry and chatted with guests. Hostels are enjoyable due to the close quarters with other travelers.
The common spaces always hold interesting conversation. I was lucky enough to speak with a young Danish man as well as a local Virginian about President Trump, military involvement overseas and commercial fishing (and life on the water, in general).

After showering and getting my belongings in order, my roommate Steven (lower bunk) and I spoke at length about social programs and basic human rights. I went to sleep around eleven o’clock.
Having reached my cycling goal of Washington, D. C., I’m signing off this blog for the time being. I plan to take it up again when I continue through the southern states in the not-so-distant future. I have enjoyed reflecting on my days, and am very much looking forward to the next grand adventure.
If you found this blog, and read through even a portion of my gibberish, feel free to leave a comment or question. I’d enjoy hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Nels Bergquist
