Mt. Joy to York Furnace, Pennsylvania – July 18, 2017

Bales and Blooms - Pennsylvania
Hearing the sound of a riding lawnmower prompted a hasty retreat from my campsite. I was pedaling by 6:15 AM.

Needing to eat, I stopped at a public park on the Susquehanna River at around eight o’clock. There I encountered two older men with what looked like a small shrimp pot; inside was a large steak. While one dipped the trap into a small tributary, the other slowly pulled on a long pipe; filling the humid air with a comfortable smell. I asked what they were trying to catch. “Minnows for a pond,” the non-smoker replied. The wives of these gentlemen lost the battle years ago.

Crossing the Susquehanna (Morning Fog)
I cycled hills until noon. Staring up at a steep incline, I cued LZ’s “Stairway”. It’s becoming clear that mine “lies on the whispering wind.”

At York Furnace, I pulled off for an extended stay. I was back on the banks of the Susquehanna River and was ready for a snooze. I pulled my teriyaki chicken sandwich from its wrapper and began eating, swinging in my hammock. Sure enough, I dumped a portion of the chicken on two areas of my white long-sleeve shirt. Heading down to the Susquehanna with a bar of soap, I began to contemplate third world countries.

Before the Rain (Shirt Drying) - Susquehanna River
Hanging my clean shirt to dry, I took a long nap in my hammock. I woke to thunder rolling around overhead. Hurriedly, I packed my tent (now dry) and all of my other belongings just as the sky opened. I stayed tight against a mature maple until the downpour subsided.

Starting to pedal, I soon came upon Otter Creek Campground. I called it a day.

The campsite manager was kind enough to allow me to use the centrally-located pavilion. I was able to run a laundry line between posts and dry wet clothing. Having little food, and not wanting to run into town, I called Roma’s Pizza. Free delivery! While waiting, I was joined by Jeremy, a Ham radio enthusiast. He had just started a job in the area and was waiting on his rental home to open up (another renter was occupying it until the end of the month). He took the time to set up his Ham radio and let me know where people were calling in from (Peru, Israel, Vermont, etc). I found it fascinating.

When evening approached, I headed to the shower building, then relaxed in my hammock. Tomorrow, I enter Maryland.
