York Furnace, Pennsylvania to Jarrettsville, Maryland – July 19, 2017

Maryland Selfie
The temperature today was the most adverse that I have faced (90+ degrees and HUMID). I did all of my cycling before noon, just shy of thirty miles. At the end of the ride, I tried to eat an ice cream cone, but most of it ended up on my hand or the cement. I couldn’t keep up with the drips, especially trying to speak with three other cyclists sitting near me.

I have found that every east coast cyclist out for a ride wears Spandex and clip-in shoes. It’s all about speed here. Color selections are varied, but  tend toward hot yellows and pinks. Using BMX pedals while wearing Converse All Stars and baggy shorts draws looks of confusion. I also haven’t seen any albatross-style handlebars. I’ll do it my way.

That Rolling Farmland
About fourteen miles in, I encountered the Maryland border, took the ritualistic selfie and moved on. Reflecting on it, this will be the final east coast state that I will ride through on this trip. I plan to return within the next seven years to cycle the south.

After the ice cream (which I should have had in a cup), I pedaled to the Jarrettsville Public Library. Hunkering down in the air-conditioned room, I had time to read, write and research different topics. I did not leave until just before closing (8:00 PM). These public buildings are a godsend for those living on the road.

Using the Google Maps application, I was able to get a feel for the surrounding area. The public ballfields didn’t offer a discrete area for camping. Behind the library, on the other hand, looked reasonable.

I grabbed a salad at a local pizza joint, then headed back to the library to set up my tent, bottle shower and sleep. The first spot I tried resulted in a bee sting on my right shoulder blade. I was obviously near a nest. I moved about fifteen feet away and was fine. I am slightly allergic to stings; I’ll certainly have a welt. My main concern is that I not bother anyone.
